Graphite morphology is one of structures
that we find in cast iron. Characteristic from graphite that we know is very
hard. It because of graphite is one of the carbide. From the literature known
that graphite has….. A number of Graphite will determin properties of cast iron.
We know there are many morphologies of graphite, they are flake/lamellar,
Spheroidal, coral, vermicular, chunky etc.
Spheroidal graphite
pictures:
Characteristic from spheroidal graphite has
advantages and makes cast iron has good properties such as low melting grade,
good fluid and casting, good cutting strength, good hardenability, high
resistance etc. The causes of this characteristic is Spheroidal graphite as a
carbide it has good hardenability but the shape is different with other
graphite, lamellar graphite for examplary that has notch effect from the shape become central of tension and usually
to be the origin of failure defect especially from outside load.
Vermicular
Graphite
Vemicular graphite usually known as
Compacted graphite cast iron or CG Iron. The microstructure of this graphite
like worm and stubby form not as long as lamellar graphite. Shape or
microstructure and mechanical properties from vermicular graphite are between lamellar
and spheroidal graphite. So that the application from this material is adapting
with this properties. Example product use CG iron is exhaust manifolds and any
of other automotive parts.
